Interview

Envy is Blind is the name of a living art project headed by Mike Poggenburg, focusing not only on music, but also writing and visual art. Formed in late 1999, Envy is Blind has already established itself as one of the most promising new acts in the electro-EBM scene.

The band's first release, The Eyes of Time's Conception, reveals a refreshingly new take on lyrical thought and dedication to musical quality. The album is a carrier of a philosophy of life and art, based on concepts ranging from Taoism to nihilism to romanticism. These key ideas are prevalent not only in the music, but in all aspects of Envy is Blind's writing.

Evolve ties together some of the ideas of The Eyes of Time's Conception with concepts of evolution and change. Music, like all aspects of our culture, is an individually understood phenomenon, and all individually understood phenomena are considered free elements for the individual to change. It exists only as we allow it to. This is the most important conclusion we can draw: that perceptions can be altered, that structures are flexible, that ideas will evolve and grow.
The Eyes of Time's Conception is EiB's extremely limited, hard-hitting EBM debut. Called "an outfit where music and art coalesce into a realm of EBM modernist artwork," Envy is Blind represents "the New Folk Music of a Post-Everything Era: dark vocals delivering some of the most intelligent lyrics being written today." Anthemic, thought provoking, meditative, spiritual, and some of the best dance tracks you'll hear.
Review(s):
"Out of a varied collection of demos and first releases from unsigned bands, this CD shows no signs of being ‘a first album.’

Track number one starts out with a solid beat and media excerpts throughout, much like the Cruxshadows have been doing lately, and akin to what Contagion did on their first CD.

Track number five, Fallen, is a droney-moodish piece that would have been great to pair with at the beginning of the album with track number six, Covenant right after it.

It is very refreshing when a band ‘club-izes’ a few tracks for DJs such as myself, rather than waiting for a future single or E.P version. Mike Poggenburg is a one person band that seems to be on the route of self-discovery, much like Android Lust’s Shikee, and the music is not going to be leaving my disc player for a while.

My fourteen-year-old daughter likes this band. How frightening is that?"
